Window units or central air in Buffalo
A lot of Buffalo still runs on a couple of window units hauled up from the basement each June. That arithmetic worked when the airport logged roughly 19.7 days a year at 85°F or more (1991-2020). The count is now about 26.6 (2016-2025), the warm nights have climbed with it, and whole-house cooling looks a lot more reasonable than it used to.

The nights are the change
At Buffalo Niagara International Airport, nights that never dropped below 70°F went from 9.4 a year to 14.5 (NOAA, 1991-2020 compared with 2016-2025). On a night like that a second-floor bedroom in a brick or clapboard house built before the war holds onto the afternoon, and a box fan in the window just stirs it.

Window and portable units, honestly
- Low price, and a dead one is easy to replace.
- Loud, they take over a window, and they have to come out or get wrapped before the snow.
- Single-hose portables blow indoor air outside and pull hot outdoor air back in through every gap, so they cool less than a window unit with the same BTU label.
- Nobody repairs them. When one quits, a new one usually costs less than the fix.
Central air
A house with a gas furnace and ducts is most of the way there: add a coil on the furnace and a condenser outside. Fixr's installed range nationally is $5,800 to $14,400. It runs quietly and takes the humidity out of every room at once. Installation details.
Ductless
In a radiator house, wall-mounted ductless heads split the difference: much quieter and more efficient than window units, no ductwork, and most models heat as well. Fixr lists $4,577 to $8,328. Ductless mini splits.
Signs it is time to move up
- You run three or more window units and buy a replacement nearly every year.
- An older adult, or someone whose health condition gets worse in heat, lives with you.
- The upstairs bedrooms are still warm at 2 a.m.
- The furnace is near the end anyway, which makes adding a coil or going to a heat pump a smaller step.
Renting an upper flat? New York's home improvement statute excludes a room air conditioner built to be taken out without altering the building, so putting one in is not a home improvement contract under General Business Law 770. Anything permanent needs your landlord's okay first.
What people around Buffalo want to know
Does central air make sense in a Buffalo house?
For many houses it does, particularly ones that already have a furnace and ducts. The airport now records more 85 degree days and more 70 degree nights than its 1991 to 2020 average. In a radiator house, ductless heads are the usual alternative.
Is a portable AC a good idea?
It is the simplest to set up and the weakest performer. A single-hose model exhausts indoor air and draws outdoor heat back in to replace it. A window unit with the same rating generally does more.
