AC installation and replacement in Buffalo
Most suburban Buffalo houses already have the hard part: a gas furnace pushing air through ducts. Central air then means a condenser in the yard and a cooling coil set on top of that furnace. Fixr's national installed range is $5,800 to $14,400, and in practice the ductwork, the wiring and the house itself swing the number more than the logo on the box.

Which job is yours
- First-time central air on an existing furnace. Roughly 88% of homes across the 35 ZIPs we cover burn gas for heat (Census ACS 2020-2024), and most of the suburban ones push it through ducts. The installer sets an evaporator coil in the furnace's supply plenum, runs copper line set and a condensate drain to the outside, pours or sets a pad, and wires a dedicated circuit with a disconnect.
- Swapping out a tired system. Same components, new ones in place of old. Expect the indoor coil to go along with the condenser, since mismatched halves are a bigger problem now that new equipment runs on different refrigerants. The refrigerant switch.
- A boiler house. Hot water radiators leave no furnace to hang a coil on. The routes are ductless heads, a small-duct high-velocity system, or a new air handler and ducts in the attic. Options for older houses.
Seven lines a good quote contains
- Tonnage, plus how they arrived at it. An ACCA Manual J load calculation is the standard; a square-footage guess is not. Sizing explained.
- Model numbers for both the condenser and the coil, and which refrigerant they use.
- Rated efficiency. Since 2023 the federal floor for a split-system AC installed in the northern states, New York among them, is 13.4 SEER2.
- Electrical: is the new breaker, wire run and disconnect in the price or extra?
- Ductwork: did anyone look at it, and is any sealing or resizing included?
- Permits: whether the City or your town wants one, and who files it.
- Written warranty terms, listed separately for parts and for labor.
Price ranges
Fixr lists new central air at $5,800 to $14,400 installed; its $8,750 average is built on a job that includes new ducts. A Cheektowaga ranch with sound ducts and a coil dropped onto a newer furnace usually comes in toward the low end. A two-zone colonial in Orchard Park, or anything needing duct surgery, climbs. Pricing a heat pump instead runs $5,000 to $15,000 on Fixr's numbers, and only the heat pump can draw NYS Clean Heat incentives. Heat pumps.
One thing not to count on: the IRS says the federal 25C credit stopped applying to qualifying AC and heat pump equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. If a quote still lists it as a saving, ask why.
When to book
The install calendar fills fast once June turns humid. Shopping in April or May, or in September for the following summer, gives you more dates to pick from and more time to compare.
The paperwork New York requires
State law treats putting in air conditioning or heating equipment as home improvement work. Above $500, the agreement has to be written and signed, and you keep a right to back out until midnight of the third business day after signing (General Business Law 770 and 771). Quotes and your rights.
What people around Buffalo want to know
What does adding central air to a furnace house cost?
Fixr puts new central air at $5,800 to $14,400 installed nationally. A coil and condenser added to a furnace whose ducts are in good shape usually lands in the bottom half of that. Ask for every line item in writing.
How do I know what tonnage my house needs?
From a Manual J load calculation done on your house, not from square footage alone. The Department of Energy cautions that rules of thumb tend to produce oversized equipment.
Is a permit needed for central air in the City of Buffalo?
Check with the installer. Inside the city, Chapter 238 of the City Code ties heating work to a City heating contractor license and a permit, and the suburbs each have their own rules. A contractor who works here should know which apply and file them.
