Cold-climate heat pumps in Buffalo

Think of a heat pump as an air conditioner with a reverse gear. The cold-climate kind cools the house through a humid July, then flips around and pulls heat indoors for most of a Buffalo winter. Fixr's national installed range is $5,000 to $15,000, and NYS Clean Heat money, applied by a participating contractor, can take a bite out of that.

If the AC is due anyway

When the old condenser is finished, the gap between a straight AC replacement and a heat pump tends to be smaller than people assume, and the heat pump is the one that qualifies for Clean Heat incentives. Summer cooling is the same either way. The difference is that you also gain a second heat source.

A Buffalo January

Over 2016-2025, January at the airport averaged a high of 33.6°F and a low of 21.5°F (NOAA). Cold-climate models are designed to keep producing heat at those temperatures, with output tapering as it gets colder. A common local setup leaves the gas furnace in place for the bitter nights and lets the controls hand off between the two. Ask what the specific model is rated to deliver at 5°F, and at what outdoor temperature the furnace takes over.

NYS Clean Heat, as it works in Buffalo

  • National Grid delivers electricity to most of the city and administers Clean Heat for its customers.
  • National Grid says incentives depend on the house and the heat pump type, and that a participating contractor figures your estimate with the incentive already subtracted.
  • What happens to the existing furnace or boiler can change how a job is treated. If you mean to keep it as backup, have the contractor confirm the effect on the incentive before you sign.
  • The NYS Clean Heat website lists participating contractors.

As for federal help, the IRS says the 25C credit no longer covers equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025.

With ducts or without

A furnace house with ducts gets a ducted heat pump in place of the AC's condenser and coil. A radiator house usually goes ductless. Ductless mini splits.

Questions for the installer

  1. Is this a cold-climate model, and what heating output is it rated for when it is very cold outside?
  2. Do you participate in NYS Clean Heat, and what incentive does this job earn?
  3. What happens to my furnace or boiler, and does that change the incentive?
  4. Where will the outdoor unit go so snow sliding off the roof doesn't bury it?
  5. Will the electrical panel need work?

What people around Buffalo want to know

Can a heat pump handle a Buffalo winter?

Cold-climate models are built to keep heating through a Buffalo January, with output that drops as temperatures fall. Many households keep the furnace or boiler as a backup. Ask for the rated output at 5°F.

What does a heat pump cost around Buffalo?

Fixr's national range runs $5,000 to $15,000 installed. NYS Clean Heat incentives, applied by a participating contractor, can reduce it; National Grid says the amount varies job by job.

Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?

Not for 2026 installs. The IRS says the 25C energy efficient home improvement credit doesn't apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
